Yesterday while driving home from some errands, Libby and I got held up at an intersection by a motorcycle cop. I figured either the Governor or President were in town today. Well two chase cars and 6 more motorcycle cops later, it turned out they were holding traffic to allow the "Secret Order of the Boll Weevils" mobile party unit to drive by unimpeded by traffic lights. As you can see it is basically an old school bus with the back top half cut off to allow the drunk men dressed-up as green bugs to wave to everyone. Apparently it has something to do with Carnival Memphis, which is kinda like a Memphis Marti Gras. You read more about them on their myspace page.I think it is great that we live in such a safe city (after all it has only the 2nd highest violent crime rate in the US) that 8-10 cops can be taken off patrolling the streets of the city to help ferry the green bugs throughout the town.

I too was held up in traffic on June 5, 2007 at the intersection of East Parkway and Poplar to allow the "Secret Order of Boll Weevil's" to be ushered through the red light while on their way to the downtown area. I can honestly say that I was tickled to see the lighter side of Memphis. These guys are a positive thing for Memphis and Shelby County. They raise funds for charities that benefit children. In a world where people are so politically correct, it's nice to see that some are willing to go to such extremes to help snap us back into reality and remind us of a time when people weren't so easily offended by someone doing "good" for the community simply because they themselves might not agree with the
methods used to carry out such a wonderful fund raising event.
i love those guys! i'm sure the police they use are off duty guys earning money on the side. i've hired police as security for events and the only way to do it was to get off duty guys. go boll weevils!
